History of the Edgefield Hotel
The above postcard of Edgefield, titled "View on Square", dates to 1912, eight years before the Edgefield Hotel was built. The image on the right is a view of town square today.
Around 1912, the Goods Roads Movement began to attract attention and support of farmers and automobile industrialists. In an effort to construct a permanent highway connecting Chicago to Miami, the Dixie Highway Association was born. Not only would local industries and municipalities benefit from tourism, but farmers would have a more dependable method of getting goods to market. In 1918, the South Carolina State Highway Commission reported that it had completed surveys and plans for an 8.42 mile stretch of the Dixie Highway between Edgefield and Greenwood. The Commission was also looking at an additional fourteen miles in Edgefield County.
The Edgefield Hotel we see today would not be built until 1919 to accommodate for the increase in visitors associated with the Dixie Highway.

As we being our emergency stabilization work, we wish to recognize our first flagship donation given to us earlier this year by the Cordesville United Methodist Church. Thank you to the congregation for their support and partnership. (Pictured: Charlena Rivers and Cynthia Gibbs)
This multi-year restoration project will return the historic church to usefulness as a local community space that is befitting of Taveau’s history and cultural legacy. We hope that you support this effort.
