| | | | Headlines + Happenings February 12, 2024 | | | | | | UPDATE: Taveau Church Sacred Spaces Program | | We are proud to share that Preservation South Carolina has received $75,000 in funding from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
This funding will support efforts to preserve the historically and culturally significant Taveau Church, which dates to 1835. Taveau was selected as one of 31 places nationwide out of more than 550 applications, reinforcing both its historical importance and its promise as a new center of community for the future. "We are proud to work with the Taveau Legacy Committee and other local, statewide, and regional individuals and organizations in preserving this place and its story”, states John Hildreth, Board Chair of Preservation South Carolina. | | | | Today, emergency stabilization work on Taveau is nearly complete. On February 1, 2024, Taveau was lifted off its brick piers by approximately six feet and blocked into place while a new foundation is built and sills are installed. Once the foundation has been restored, the church will be set back to its original elevation.
We would like to thank the team at Meadors, Inc. for their incredible job throughout this emergency stabilization journey and lift process. | | "Taveau’s restoration, however, is about more than just preserving a historical structure because of its unique architecture. It would also be a testament to the faith of the Black men and women who preserved Taveau as a place for their worship and coincidentally, passed down 175 years of Black worship experience including inspired preaching and soulful spirituals. Taveau tells this important story as well as the story of the local area, its land, its people, and its culture."
