Preservation SC to Receive State Funding

BIG NEWS! For the first time in Preservation SC's 30-year history, the state has allocated funds to help us preserve South Carolina's vital architectural history with $500,000 toward our revolving fund, and $300,000 toward the Dawkins House project in Union.

This step reflects Gov. Henry McMaster’s call during his inaugural address, in which he made the case for conservation and preservation. “The big question today is: Will anyone recognize our South Carolina in 100 years?” he said. “Will we allow our state’s culturally and environmentally significant structures, monuments, lands, islands and waterways to be lost forever — to over-development, mismanagement, flooding, erosion or from storm damage?

This funding would not be possible without the help of our dedicated supporters and the leaders of Union, Spartanburg, and York counties, specifically Representatives Dennis Moss and Doug Gilliam, who were instrumental in helping us secure the funding.

Please join us in thanking our state representatives for their support of our work of preserving South Carolina's architectural heritage.

Judge Thomas Dawkins House ("The Shrubs")

Union, SC

Located at the end of N. Church Street in downtown Union is an unassuming building that does not outwardly show its history as the one-time state capital of SC during the Civil War. The Dawkins House ("The Shrubs"), circa 1845, is a 4,500+ square-foot Federal-style home adjacent to the University of South Carolina-Union campus.

It served as the residence of Judge Thomas Dawkins, a well-known political leader in Union County and the state of South Carolina. When Dawkins built his house, it was added onto a pre-existing structure. Portions of the pre-existing structure may date back to as far as the 1790s making it one of Union's oldest homes.

In October 2022, Preservation SC acquired the future rights to the Dawkins House at a property tax sale. Upon our acquisition of the property in November 2023, we will receive $300,000 from the state for this project. It is our intent to work with the community to not only find a purpose for this significant building, but also to ensure it will be standing for another 178 years.

Edgefield Hotel Update

For those that may be newly following our organization, here is a short summary of the Edgefield Hotel.

In 2017, a leading Edgefield citizen donated the town’s historic hotel to Preservation SC.

The original hotel was built in 1813 and known as the "Planters Inn" during the antebellum period. For much of the 19th century, the property was used as a tavern and hotel. This early frame structure would later burn in the fire of 1892. The site lay vacant until 1919, when local leaders of Edgefield, organized by a stock company, invested in building what we see today.

We are please to share that we are negotiating a sale with a developer, with engagement of the town, for a historic adaptive reuse that will greatly benefit Edgefield. We hope to announce a groundbreaking project in early 2024. Stay tuned!
