Call for Nominations
Deadline April 1, 2024 | |
It's not too late to submit a nomination to the 2024 South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards. Each year thousands of South Carolinians work to preserve the state’s legacy that is reflected in our historic buildings, structures, and sites. Since 1995, Preservation South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor have sponsored the statewide awards.
Should you know any individuals, businesses, or organizations that have shown exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation, and interpretation of our architectural and cultural heritage, we invite you to nominate them for one of our awards.

Mable Owens Clarke, 2023 Governor's Award Recipient
ABOUT
Mable Owens Clarke is a sixth-generation native of rural Pickens County, South Carolina. She attended a one-room Rosenwald-era African American school that continues to stand adjacent to Soapstone Baptist Church. She attended the school through the fifth grade until it closed due to mandatory school consolidation. She completed her secondary education at an all-Black school in Easley, SC. Upon graduation she moved to Boston where she pursued higher education and a career in accounting. After many years she returned to her native Liberia Community to aid her aging parents. To keep a promise to her mother, she cared for her special needs brother until his death, and for 22-years, she hosted a monthly (10 months/year) fish fry lunch to raise funds to support Soapstone Baptist Church that founded by freed slaves on lands donated by her great-grandparents. Her efforts led to state-wide and international recognition and support and directly led to payment of an outstanding mortgage and placement of a perpetual conservation easement over the property that will ensure protection of the church, a former slave cemetery, and the one-room school. The Dawkins House of Union Video & Update
| |
In October 2023, Preservation SC acquired the rights to the Dawkins House through a property tax sale. Upon our acquisition of the property, we received $300,000 from the State Legislature for this project.
A structural investigation from Bennett Preservation Engineering PC along with a conceptual plan for stabilization is being developed. It is our intent to work with the community to not only find a purpose for this significant building, but also to ensure it will be standing for another 178 years. Learn more here.
This incredible video was created and sponsored by Montgomery Construction of Lexington.
